My MA journey
During the height of Covid, I, like most people I think, I felt quite lost.
I was living in Amman, Jordan, in quite heavy restrictions and I was starting to feel very un-me if that makes sense. I hadn’t seen my family back in the UK for two years, most of my freelance graphic design work had been paused because of the pandemic and I had a newborn baby (along with two older children to home educate). I knew I had to do something positive to make change, and after being inspired by my wonderful friend Aleesha, I decided to look at returning to studies.
Without doubt, this was the best thing I’ve ever done.
One morning, I opened up the UCAS website and just scrolled through what further education courses were available to me. If I’m honest, I’d never heard of Falmouth but it soon popped up as an option for a Masters in Graphic Design which I could complete online. And this wasn’t a course that had become online because of the pandemic so it was really well set up for it.
I nervously applied and waited for the inevitable rejection - I had the biggest imposter syndrome! But unexpectedly, I received the offer of a place and I enrolled to start my studies in September 2021. Two years of studies followed where I learnt so much from my tutors but crucially my fellow peers from around the world. I’m so proud of much of the work I produced - you can see a selection of images below. As well as really developing my graphic design skills, I really discovered what makes me tick, and what I’m passionate about.
I ultimately specialised in design for early years education, looking at inclusivity in the classroom. You can see in more detail some of the projects I worked on during my MA here on my journal blog that I had to keep throughout the course.
If anyone is considering returning to studies for any reason, I would highly recommend it. It has given me the opportunity to reflect so much on how I work and, as a result, I enjoy my work so much more. Do it, do it, do it!
